Shortest Path To The Heart
March 21, 2003

they say there is a will to killing
a steadfast hardening of the heart
a tearing of the self's partition
letting in the culling

they say there is a special place
where killing comes from, where it's been
no harvest fills the furrow
nor seeding salt to season

they say there is emotion
cold hatred's crushing passion
a taste of the abyssal trench
alien and quiet

I know where will has gotten
how man has drawn will's burden
how killing made of man a brute
and brutal became man

but killing's less than nothing
an empty that is mortal
gilt hand upon the barrel
there is no will, nor passion

guilt, you say - and broken to that meter
no harbor here have I for that long passage
else when killing is done and gone
no harvest lingers on, a field and a poison in the fallow

no, killing is a happen - neither stance nor action
a pause before the threshold, before there is no threshold
and there were no limits - never a one to bend
and killing is but empty and a friend
