Baking Without Eating

it ��s the panic
how fitting in is like espionage
not which fork goes with pie
but whether the crust is flake or graham
and did I bake it right
how I ��m not to eat the shoo-fly
and the molasses in the rhubarb is just the lightest touch
unspoken classes of shame and glory
when all I really wanted was to bake
and to eat
and to call it done and done
no more of this dripping sin
of blame with pectin and lard
nor little egg finishes washed on after
scorched just so

dress with a bow
no apron
perfect

and honey, you sure you want to eat that
it ��s mite rich, and you so healthy

well
let ��s cut that butter in
and should the bad begin
smile just so
just so

then  ��

drag them to the marshes
bring on Niven ��s empty horses
for to whisk them down below
apple and blood, lather and mud
and breath like musty bellows

has anyone seen Betsy-Lynn
her recipe books are torn and vacant
her adder ��s tongue gone silent

has anyone seen my husband dear
demanding always smiles
his ties and binds are flown away
perhaps upon his travels

then  ��

well, the panic slows
and the nights have pie and horses
so very, very tasty
