Lintels and Un-Limned Spaces

if you do it right, take out the screen at twilight
pull back the curtains, and leave the window open
sometimes the night will come in, curl up by your head
softly next to you purring, on the side opposite the cat
already ensconced in that manner best to complicate breathing
so you can listen until the first fingers of reflection
stumbling drunk down off the mountains singing
roll that curled starlit wonder on its side
a plush against the cheek as it stretches
brushes its coat of void and slumber
drinking your coffee on its way out

other side, cat reaches across face, pat-pat
and flip-flap back, an exchange against lips, eyelids
happy hush just waiting for those drunkards
paused between verses, to start their rush again

if you put the screen back in the window
close it tight, roll down the blackout curtains
and snuggle the cat tight, you can just about remember
every detail of both dawn and twilight
with all those starlit roads between, unfolding
maybe mumbling spurious nothings to the cat
or from hooked velvet tongue
getting them back in trade for coffee
