A Stack By Days
February 21, 2022

once a year, by habit if not tradition
we gather on the shores after the ice has gone out
start a cooking fire in the old steel boat on even raked the dirt
because you don ��t want that fire direct to metal
do up our favorite out-of-doors meals
burgers, red dogs, flat breads on cast iron
raise small stars in ember, each happy spark a brief exhalation
eat and raise a few glasses by ownliest variation
mead and malt, water and milk, simple to fancy
bank the fire low, bring out that latest pine coffin
stuffed full of notes and letting go, a burger sometimes
shavings off the old rocker the grandparents loved and broke
a bit of junk mail from that one unethical seed company
which just won ��t stop sending pulp entreaties
torn sleeve from the kid ��s clothes added last minute
because they ��ve run  �� again  �� flat out into the trees
and something came off

to let the year go, released to sky

until the year we couldn ��t make it, stuck home
now three coffins deep, taking up space
with apologies, and maybe it ��ll be safe come March
seven hundred thirty-fifth

waiting, unreleased
