A Midwest Nowhere

dear meow
the whole goal
of buying this farm
abandoned in the corn
was digging dirt
late at night

that the aliens might come
and lift me up in white light
as those who came before
found rapture

but when that light came
and I was ready
so ready

you arrived
stood your ground
and meowed long
full pitiful hunger
into that gleam

half lifted
meowed again
and set down
four times repeated

thus now
your bowl is full
and the door is propped
just so

if not aliens
maybe, delightfully
I can accidentally
acquire werewolves
while you keep company
