A Country Prayer

in this land of plenty
my water burns my skin
the shower not for cleaning
nor for getting in

to be so very lucky
on this slab of poisoned earth
how fitting my America
explaining its own worth

my garden drawing seizures
from within the very ground
tomatoes and green peppers
spreading shakes and rash around

my amber fields seized for closure
my home at last torn down
how fitting my America
calling me its own

how blessed to have this luxury
by the gods of apathy
