The move went relatively simple, all things considered. And although still yet-to-be-furnished, we have safely made it to our copy-pasted shoebox within the southernmost edge of the city's ever-expanding borders. This week will see a fair amount of Ikeda product building (I am writing this on my computer from the floor, not as comfortable as I remember the floor being when I was a child) and some getting accustomed to the new air.
Though having recently revived my having of a smartphone (received my Fairphone 3+ about five months ago) I am already tiring of it. I understand a lot of functionality is great, I have come to thoroughly enjoy utilising a number of apps in my life. However, it gets overbearing quite quickly. Leading myself down a second round of the "dumbphone" rabbit hole, I have found out about a cool project from a Swiss company called Punkt (German for punctuation, I believe, not an homage to Ashton Kutcher's career). A minimalist phone, with a striking design philosophy, now with Signal messaging. Scrolling through some of the comments in the videos about it, I heard a reference to pairing the device with a "gemini PDA" for a more intentional relationship to connectivity on the go. This intrigued me as I will admit I am quite impressed by the design of the Punkt MP02 device, and after looking into the Gemini PDA idea I thought it may not be too bad of an experiment.
Now, I don't wish to jump into this in the excitement of the move or anything, but I am tempted by the idea of a simpler phone with a second-device in the backpack to help with some light writing and research on the go. That said, with the new CrYpTo job, I am uncertain how much of my work can be done with either devices (though I am not 100% against the notion of keeping work at the home desk as much as possible.
I cannot help but think how Solarpunk this setup might be. I can start to get back to my Gemini Network curiosities, as I am already quickly tiring of the Discord avalanche that is working in crypto. A balance is always best to find, but I would like to start frequenting some alleyways of the Gemini Network. The sow relationship to connectivity is lovely, but it does need to start growing I think. Dumbphones (or minimalist phones as some prefer to say) have a great pacing with "you just need to call or text me, anything else can wait" but that similar experience today internationally certainly seems to be more similar to WhatsApp or Discord (at least in my new industry of employment). How can the balance be struck there, I wonder?
I would love to get fully into the small internet lifestyle and bring some more of that into my daily life. Being in crypto is quite beyond the modern https as well, but in a radically different way - and I wonder if that gap can be bridged at all. Maybe this dual device set up is a great experiment in this idea.
Hmm, maybe I just convinced myself of this, I did get a hefty discount somehow on the website. Will update again soon. Bountiful researches.
