A Scarf is just an unfinished Afghan...

Ok, silly title but after a long day, I am not very focused but still wanted to get something up on my capsule because it has been such a long time.

Someone posted the above title as a "one-liner" on a network my BBS is connected to.

WRT54GL

I had an extra Linksys WRT54GL sitting on a shelf in my closet so I set it up to function as a wireless access point in my garage. I have several lights and a camera that I wanted to have a better connection to. I remember back in the day those little routers were quite the tool. I remember helping setup wireless access at a campground where several of these devices were connected to each other to make sure the entire campground had wireless access to the Internet.

XMPP (prosody)

I have been wanting to add support for http file uploads to my prosody XMPP server and found that the latest release 0.12 makes this much easier to setup. When I tried upgrading though it failed and after talking with the people on Prosody's MUC, it looks like the best solution is to upgrade the OS on the server from Raspbian/Debian 9 to the latest. I setup a 2nd raspberry pi to test this on and it looks like everything works well. Now I just need to take the time to migrate the accounts over to the new server and then switch IP addresses so that the DNS resolution works with the new server. Oh, I also have to mount the raspberry pi in a permanent home. I have a rack for the PI but I need some time to connect everything up.

Gemini Clients

My favorite Gemini client has been Amfora almost since I started using Gemini. I originally used Ariane on my android phone but removed it when development stopped. I have since switched to using the Android version of Lagrange on my phone but still have Amfora installed in Termux but it is harder to use without a full sized keyboard. When I first learned about Gemini I tried out AV-98 and found it interesting however I didn't like it as much. I heard about a fork of AV-98 called av98-offline (I may remember it incorrectly). Recently, I ran accross a few posts about offpunk (new name) and how it cached or synced content for later viewing or viewing when offline. While I am not as interested in the offline portion, I was happy to find out that Offpunk can view gemini, gopher, finger, html pages along with rss feeds. The post by who I believe is the author of Offpunk described how Offpunk even replaced Newsboat for viewing RSS feeds.

After getting Offpunk installed and learning how to subsribe to feeds and pages, I have been very impressed. I wouldn't be suprised it it becomes my new favorite browser. I especially like how bookmarks, subscriptions and other customized lists are kept in gemtext(gmi) format which is easy to use with scripts or sync between multiple devices using syncthing. I love how I can jump from a gemini page to a gopher page or even an rss feed without any extra effort.

My hats off to "ploum" for their work on this project.

Truth

I am concerned about the state of the world we live in. How we seem so willing to let go of freedom that many people sacrificed their lives for during the Revolutionary War.The freedom of speech is not something to let go of. I can't give up our freedom just because someone feels bad about something that was said. Wake up people! Feelings Lie!
