I will not go far back in time
//pr1ba.ru/gemlog/09_04_2021.gmi Because I did it here.
It is clear that my understanding of the PC has historically been above the average user. But I was a regular user who dreamed of unavailable Apple products in the 00s. And out of interest I tried various * nix systems.
With the growth in the work sphere, the passage of time and the development of the market in the Russian Federation, various devices became more accessible. At some point, the PowerMac appeared at home and many other things. In general, it was interesting and joyful. If not a single BUT!
OSX became my work / home tool around 2007, Apple then released the phenomenal 10.4 - Tiger. Have not switched to intel yet. The internet was still different.
Around the same time, the first Iphone comes out, in fact a player that can call. (Although I was then left with two different devices ipod + phone). Later, leaving this bundle, changing ipod to ipod touch, in order to use autonomously some applications and a reader from the player. This bundle remained the main one for a long time, it had to be upgraded less often, changing devices and it gave more autonomy than the iphone.
I lived in this world until 2015, sometimes changing my technique to a “new” one. I have always followed the rule not to buy new equipment in the store, I always bought used equipment from hands or from Western auctions, because I consider the prices for new releases of equipment to be unjustified, and I do not consider the resource of used equipment to be adequately spent.
I saw how the world is changing, how the Internet is becoming different, but I did not really react to these changes. Until I discovered that the working MacBook Pro given to me with 8GB of memory turns into a typewriter.
No, of course he did a lot of work well, but there was no reasoning for the consumption of the resource. The system caches everything and works quickly, but looking at the memory consumption, I was more and more surprised. The situation with OS and software updates was amazing, with each release of the operating system, developers updated the software and new versions stopped working on your version if you didn't want to update it.
I got rid of Apple technology and finally left for Linux systems at home and at work. A little later, I got a chance to change my work activity mainly to administer Linux servers, which, firstly, made it possible to dive deeper into the system, and secondly, to change working tools.
And then I began to play with the optimization of the system. (No, not fanatical .. I'm not a supporter of building everything from source code, since I prefer to deploy a fully working environment in no more than 20-30 minutes). But the working moments themselves began to dictate different approaches to me. I tried i3. I'm used to vim as a universal tool. Learned about mutt - as a mail client that can be run anywhere. It will cope with its task (checking mail) and will not gobble up your 1GB of RAM, like checking in a browser.
I learned about vim keyring in browsers, as well as about console browsers (links \ lynx).
And before that, I understood that it was unreasonable to write off "old technology" by users. But now it has become customary to monitor resource consumption and understand that even 1GB of RAM in a typewriter is more than enough to do most of the work.
I recently discovered gemini \ gopher and this was the ultimate epiphany. I liked the Amfora console client so much, and exploring other people's capsules on the net brought back the Internet feeling of my youth.
I realized that I also want to reduce the use of my smartphone and bought an e-ink book. (Again, with hands, a little shabby outwardly, but a fully working kindle got to me without any problems for a couple of thousand rubles). The lack of dynamics on the screen while reading had a very strong effect on the sensations, bringing back the calmness of the evenings. Judging by the statistics of the phone, I began to use it no more than 1-1.5 hours a day.
I understand that I am only at the beginning of the path. But this is a unique feeling when you regain control over the equipment and see how the system starts up, consuming 300-400MB of RAM. How the phone turns back into a phone. How information is consumed more and more often by text, as in the old days.
