Sitting quietly

I switch off the electric heater

And the room is bathed in silence.

Sitting quietly and still,

The noises of cars and dog walking

Flow up from outside

Through the window which shows me

Blue sky through the clouds

Of this cold winter's day.

Babe is off to nursery,

Wife is off running,

And I have the house to myself.

Bliss!

My body relaxes and my mind unfurls,

Lazily stretching in those precious moments

Where the world pauses

Before the work day begins.
