I went to a friend's house last night, but before we met up there, we had dinner together. While we were at the restaurant, I decided to order an old fashioned: whiskey with bitters, sugar, water and orange zest.
I very rarely have alcohol these days. Due to a medical condition my wife cannot drink, and when we're together I don't like drinking without her. When I visit my friends, I always drive myself, and I almost never stay the night, so I end up needing to stay sober so I can get home. In years past I spent the night at friends' houses fairly frequently, so I had drinks fairly often--or sometimes imbibed in other indulgences.
The old fashioned gave me a buzz very quickly, which was unusual for me. My tolerance for alcohol tends to be quite high. A greasy order of cheese sticks set me straight, however, and I felt no ill effects from alcohol afterward, including after two more glasses of whiskey at my friend's house. Of course, I drank plenty of water and waited four hours after my last glass, just to be safe.
My only side effect this morning is a faint stomachache, which I know will disappear as soon as I eat some breakfast.
