Gen X, Millenials, Boomers... what a pointless label. How can you compare a "millenial" from Yugoslavia and another from California? What about 2 "boomers" from Alabama but one of them fought in Vietnam and the other didn't? Even identical tweens are individuals and can be very different in almost everything.

Okay... I'm not trying to be negative or something, but this TLS certificates thing is a pain in the donkey. I mean, now it just needs to change the DE to have no access to my account here. I would have a lot more to say, but it would be unpleasant...

Surely I can't be the only one who finds Aldi UK's Kevin the Carrot to be terribly tragic. Was shopping there this evening and Kevin and his family with their hopeful little faces are plastered all over the store. Hasn't anyone told them what will happen to them on Christmas day? https://www.aldi.co.uk/kevin

I built a little turn-based game for some training I'm delivering. Goal: write a bot that finds and destroys its opponent. Here, bot 2 guesses the movement pattern of bot 1 and lays a mine in its path. This one should be fun to run! π Quick demo: https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1463473663576088579/pu/pl/638JNY7n9HKh23_H.m3u8?tag=12&container=fmp4&descending=true

Consumer season is upon us. We have three contented children. We have all the bicycles we need, all the musical instruments we need, all the video stuff we need, and more lego than we should have. My relentlessly manipulated brain feels compelled to 'do the christmas thing', but everything I see looks like essentially useless crap. I don't know what to do. Please help me.

Finished the prototype for my handheld DIY computer (really a Raspberry Pi Zero dock). It boots! The soldering is terrible and the joints will probably break if I bump it too hard but it boots! Will do a write up when I have time.

Worked through the whole weekend. Main machine is recovered. Good news: It's now running 5.10.0.9 kerneland all services hosted on metal are up. Bad news: Lost all VM servers (including the one that I was testing for gemini). What I have concluded: Women are better system admins than men - I think it's in their genes. https://www.bettertechtips.com/professional/want-to-become-a-better-techie-take-care-of-your-analog-life/

And... I got the job! God damn, that was quick. I really enjoyed my time off, I had time to work on physical and mental health, but I'm ready to go back. Hope it's not as fucking exhausting as the last job. All in all, it's been a good year. I visited Scotland, lost 5kgs, got a new job, I feel better than ever. Unless I just drop dead in December, it's been my best year in a decade.

I know this doesn't belong here most likely but I'm going to post it anyways. It's sad that in today's tech era, a person with a visual impairment isn't able to install another OS completely on their own. The boot menu, (the thing you need to access in order to boot from an external drive) is yet to become accessible enough for a blind person to use. I know that the boot menu/bios need to remain as stripped down as they can, but if that's the case, shouldn't there be a way to boot from USB directly from your OS of choice?

For any gemini server developers here, make sure that the matching/checking of the domain name is case-insensitive. It looks like a few servers are case-sensitive with this, which goes against the URI spec.

The archaeo-librarian concluded the speech with another warning, βso always remember that the ancients had to structure most of their work along a timeline, in nice chunks that they could post on the social media and feeds and newsletters of their time. A very limited way to structure to work with, for sure, but thatβs what they had and so we must keep this in mind.β

Have you ever worked with someone and they just live rent free in your head since that day? I have. Back when I was working on 2nd Line Support for an application there was this one dev on 3rd line that was fucking magician as far as I can tell. You gave her proper logs and the issue was fixed in 15mins from picking up the ticket. I hope she's doing good nowadays.

Hello, I have written a script inpired by nytpu's gemlog.sh. It was written in about an hour, and does not separate out many of the config options, but it works for my setup. What config options are not hard-coded, are expected as environment variables. you can see it in action at gemini://babiak.duckdns.org/gemlog.gmi (well, technically not, becasue it isn't a CGI thing, but you get it)

Example of a curious perversion of accessibility technology: being lazy with audio mixing and making dialogue audible because "hey you can just switch the subtitles on".

I beat Cyberpunk 2077 again (I rarely do that with games), on very hard, and unlocked and beat the secret ending. It was thrilling! I think Iβve finally had enough from the game and am going to move on to something else. I genuinely donβt get what people hate about the game, but I think itβs the best game Iβve played in a long long time!

I liked this post by rlamacraft: gemini://gemini.rlamacraft.uk/replies/reframingThePhilosophyOfGemini.gmi Have to disagree with Drew here. Gemini is decidedly not a read-only distribution protocol. (As evidenced by what we're doing right here.) There is a little more nuance to it: I would call it a balance of 80/20 in favor of reading. Writing is possible, and even secure thanks to client certificates, but not as convenient as reading. So this means, if in doubt, focus on the read direction, but completely ignoring the write direction unnecessarily excludes a lot of cool potential.

Probably isnβt a hot take here, or be the first to say this, but Iβm getting super sick of the big web. It all feels so artificial, like everything is just done for money and nothing else, and the regular people on social media are just doing things for clout and the memes are samey, make no sense or just generally not funny at all. It all feels so fake. The only area I go on the web nowadays by choice are Neocities/Wiby.me sites. Good to at least see a community on the web trying to keep what creativity and thrill of exploration there is on the web alive.
