In other words, about 10 miles, or 16km. With conditioning, you could probably do that in 2-3 hours.

When Covid hit, I stopped doing regular sports, because everything shut down, even tabletennis, which is an individual sport and safe. So I gained 10 kilo, and it's not getting better because now I have to do my own cooking, which tastes so much better than the previous food I just got somewhere. It changed my life, and my table tennis is getting worse and worse. I won't be able to go pro for sure.

More evidence is needed, as walking 20k steps will take more time than HIIT for insufficiently proven health benefits.

Maybe it's not about minimizing time spent, but doing something you enjoy.

Exactly. No amount of physical activity, regardless of how time efficient it would be, does any good if people don't _do_ it. By making it enjoyable (_e.g._ walking with a dog), that makes it more likely one is going to do the activity. It doesn't matter if you can get the benefits of 2.5 hours of walking by doing 15-30 minutes of HIIT if one simply doesn't like HIIT.

This what I was wondering too. 20k steps might take around 2.5 hours every day which is a lot.

You need evidence that being active is healthy?

I believe the question is around time efficiency not effectiveness. HIIT is proven to reliably increase cardiovascular health with less of a time commitment.
