Re: Naming Computers (dctrud)
After seeing solderpunk's reply to dctrud's article, I thought that it must be fun to reply like that. Publicly, in Gemini. Let's try that.

What are other people naming thier computers?
I am! While I don't have a tricky Raspberry π cluster, I have a stationary computer, a macbook and a phone. They are named like that:
- tarvalon is the stationary computer
- salidar is the macbook
- rhuidean is the phone
A knowledgeable reader may recognise these names as these are names of various locations from the epic fantasy series ‘The Wheel of Time’ by Robert Jordan. It took me two and a half years to read it btw.
In the series, there is no magic. There is that thing called the One Power instead. The three names above are the names of locations related to this power. There is even some connection between how I use these computers and the traits of these locations!
- Tar Valon is a grand city of white colors. Many people say that it is the most important city in the world for many reasons. Sounds good to name my main computer (which is also white) with this word.
- Salidar used to be a small village until rebellous Aes Sedai (local wizardresses) decided to hide here. After that, it became a large village. So, what's the connection with the macbook? There was a time when it was my main computer rather than the larger one. I returned back to the big one afterwards when I created Sequira. Just like the rebellous Aes Sedai returned. Oh boy, it was one of my most favorite arcs.
- Rhuidean is a deserted city deep in the desert with tons of One Power artifacts hidden here. Just like my phone has lots of interesting data. Data is just like artifacts, right?
That's it. Let's have more public discussions!
