acdw's anecdote on keyboard accessibility
Really enjoyed this log. I don't know much about HCI, but I do know that one of the advantages of working more keyboard use into beginner-level computing coursework would be that the student/user doesn't need to know the context they are in if the shortcuts they are learning open and auto-focus applications. Some of my (inadvertently impromptu) training experiences revolve around providing an instruction that is entirely dependent upon the user knowing that i.e. the icons at the bottom of the screen is *called something*. Makes me think about Derrida who notes that language is an infinitely deferring series of definitions. How far back in the chain of meaning do you have to travel in order to provide actionable instruction to the learner? The average desktop environment on init really obscures any opportunity for "help". Not sure of the language here but it definitely got me thinking. Damn the specialized use!
