China has came a long way since it became a republic in 1949 with the help of a bunch of outside influences, which help create and modernized their current popular culture. A big aspect in Chinese popular culture is social media, especially the app WeChat (weixin). WeChat is one of China’s largest phenomenons and it has an estimate of one billion active users as of 2018. It is a must have essential tool to have in China, especially for people who aren’t native in China it is important to have this app. Users on the app can use it to transfer money, to chat/text, catch up on news and all of the above. WeChat is a lifestyle app, it has everything you need in it. Another observation of China’s popular culture is the obsession over Idols and catching up on celebrities. Most of these “Idols” are celebrities who are musicians, actor/actresses, models, dancers and social media influencers that catches the eye of the general public. The popularity over Idols comes from an audience that is majority teenagers and specifically teenage girls. Though some of these Idols comes from China, a majority stems from South Korea where the Idol industry is at its high, especially since its becoming popular culture here in the United States. Some of China’s popular culture comes from other countries as well, some of current modern chinese pop culture is heavily influenced by western culture + japanese and korean pop culture such as the popularity over KFC in China (KFC being an American brand).
