The Play is limited to 4G LTE, but that isn't a bad thing imo.
Completely understand what you mean here. In my neck of the woods, 5G is barely a thing yet, so I haven't been able to be arsed to care about having a phone that supports it. The z3 Play can do 5G with a snap-on module, but I don't care enough about it to try it out.
Gotta admit the main thing that keeps me coming back to Moto devices (aside from a good majority of them being supported by Lineage) is the 'chop-chop' action for turning on the flashlight. Once I got used to that, turning on the display and pulling down the notification shade to tap the flashlight button felt like a big chore on other devices.
I thought of either Lineage or calyxOS for the G Play, though the latter might only be for Pixel phones.
Calyx does support a handful of moto devices, but you are correct in that it is mostly the Pixel line and a few Fairphone devices. If I ever wind up with a Pixel again, I'll probably flash Calyx or Graphene on it. I don't see me getting a new phone until the one I have finally bites the dust, however, so that should be a long while to come.
