one thing i really appreciate about old web revival spaces like forums, mailing lists, neocities, and smolweb is the lack of unwarrented pretension. other alternates to mainstream social media, like tumblr or mastodon, tends to have an air of "we are so much better and smarter than the twitter plebs" which, while maybe true, is only true because in alternate social media spaces being Smart and Anti-Social Media is its own social niche. i imagine this is also true on bigger social media sites, but i wouldn't really know. what specifically bothers me about this, that i see specifically in tumblr spaces, is the black and white thinking over who is One Of Us vs Who Is Not with One Of Us being media literate and smart and part of the revolution or whatever. and this isn't about cancel culture or anything remotely, i mean like i see people denounce other blogs as anti-intellectualism for reading fanfiction or not posting essays analyzing their fandom on their main account. it's exhausting how trying to exist a little more free, or even just. thinking. has become another selling point persona for yourself and a way to look down on others. i don't know, maybe i'm taking this too personally and it's not that deep, but the patterns seem so consistent and so exhausting. i want more spaces that encourage education and acceptance, i guess. i miss when spaces on the left were exclusive solely due to being militant around ignorant people or microaggressions. that was dumb and is still happening and is still dumb, but at least it felt like the black and white thinking and high horse logic was coming from a good place.
i miss when i liked the internet, and i think i'm just chasing that feeling because i can only find it in exploring these spaces.
i figured out a gemini browser i can use easy enough that didn't require any sysadmin stuff, i'm using lagrange now, but i'm still posting through gemlog.blue for now because i'm used to it and it's easier for my casual usage stuff. but now i can browse better and not just use a proxy for browsing!
