Last weekend was a lot of fun.
I wanted to try out Plasma 6, at the time I had Pop_OS! 22.04, so first I tried to upgrade to the 24.04 alpha version of Pop. I must say that the results were pretty bad.
The updater goes blind, it doesn't show what it's doing and it doesn't allow to cancel the operation. After running for a while, with no hard disk activity, I decided to kill the process, as the usual options didn't work.
After that, it was impossible to start the system correctly. As I didn't make the recovery partition at the time, I reinstalled with an ISO image, that method doesn't let you recover the system more or less automatically, you have to do it through chroot.
Once the whole process was done, I relaunched the updater, giving it more time to work.
At the end, I had a brand new Pop_Os! with the Cosmic desktop, and without the possibility of installing Plasma 6, because the alpha version is based on Ubuntu 24.04 and that is anchored to Plasma 5.27.
My fault for not checking that those packages were there for Pop :-P
That said, I set out to completely change the system, so I installed Endeavour Os, the installation is quite trivial for an Arch Linux based distribution.
After installing it I had a beautiful Plasma 6 desktop.
For some reason, some programs refused to launch from the Plasma menu or via their quick launch bar icons.
These programs launched without major problems from the terminal, without errors and without major problems.
After checking the Internet to see if other people were in the same situation, and not finding anyone with the same problem or a solution, I decided that the quickest thing to do was to switch back to another distro.
In this case I decided to play it safe, KDE Neon.
The Plasma experience is good, although it is still noticeable that Wayland needs more work. It's not running as smoothly as it should.
And that's all for now :D
