Just cleaned tank and did a 50% water change yesterday. It was a slime covered mess the day before that. It has been a multi-year battle with algae that I have fought ever since previous small tank with a much less bright light developed a leak and I replaced it with current tank. I never had algae problems before. It must have been a plant i bought from the pet store at some point, but it has gotten so bad.
I really need to do weekly cleans but I can't keep that schedule, so every three weeks when I get to it, it has gotten really bad. Somehow there are even three student kinds of algae now! Used to have four fish, too. I should just start over and sanitize the whole thing, but if I'm keeping these fish alive i need to set up a parallel universe for them and put them there temporarily!
The current plant, which I bought recently from an actual aquarium store, is one that floats on top of the tank and extends roots into the water. It is supposed to try to out-compete the algae but I think it's already losing--algae grew all over the roots and now the plant looks wan. We'll see...

I have a pleco and catfish and they keep that tank pretty clean.
my wife named the pleco Randall because he's "weird" and looks like the guy of the same name from monsters, inc.

I bought a cory catfish and he ain't helping at all. Speaking of Disney movies, my tank after 3 weeks looks like when they jammed the filter wheel in the dentist office tank in "Finding Nemo"!
yeah my catfish doesn't do much but the pleco is a big boy
