Trams in Europe tends to be built for a lifetime of about 70 years still.

Electric unicycles seem cool. I've never tried one though

@jmcs While it may be more efficient with the rolling resistance, I believe someone did terrible math on that one. A trolleybus is maybe 8-10T, the trams we have here to replace it are around 80T. A regular bus here has a capacity of around 48 passengers and our tram has a capacity of about 220. That is a 4.5x passenger increase, but a 9x weight increase.

Then there is of course the cost, pollution and traffic caused by digging up the road for 6 years, to place down tracks and removing traffic lanes as well and the continual upkeep of those tracks.

Scooters and bikes do make a lot more sense than cars. but...

NYC is really dangerous because of electric bikes going 40mph in the wrong direction and through red lights...

NYPD literally looks the other way. High-speed ebikes really should be treated as vehicles and not allowed into bike lanes and parks..

Having been hit by a heavy delivery bike going the wrong way, I think I am allowed to bitch a little.

๐Ÿธ HanzBrix [OP/mod] ยท Dec 10 at 22:51:

@stack Bikes and scooters really need some separation. We used to have speed limits in europe for mopeds for example. Only slower mopeds could go on dedicated walk/cycle paths and faster mopeds were treated as cars.

Plus the tiny little escooters need to go, they are just dangerous for everyone involved.

๐Ÿš€ stack ยท Dec 11 at 00:49:

@HansBrix Yes! Most ebikes and scooters have no speed control except full-on, and easily hit 35mph. I rarely see people on regular bycicles in NYC bike lanes because it is too scary. But I often see people riding gas scooters and even motorcycles in bike lanes.

๐Ÿธ HanzBrix [OP/mod] ยท Dec 11 at 07:28:

@stack that sounds insane. ๐Ÿ˜‚

At least here in Europe people stay off the bike paths, unless on a bike or allowed moped.

Not that I think police would stop anyone riding there, I just think it's cultural. Plus our bike lanes are elevated with a curb, driving up there is not good for a vehicle. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Another NYC ebiking norm: no helmets. Also: almost every ebike is carrying a delivery guy with a giant cubical backpack.

@stack At least the backpack makes them visible. ๐Ÿ˜‚

A post for ideas โ€” Now that we already have a post bashing BEC's and their less than advantageous setup, I figured a post for idea's for good EV's could be a thing? Even sharing some vehicles that you might already know of or like, could help others discover them. Personally I love the 3 wheel scooters, but ownership is costly and they are shrouded in the stigma of handicapped people. I also had hope for the XBUS, but that seems dead. Generally the big problem with BEV's is pollution...
