But versioned releases (like Debian) are really much better than rolling releases (like Gentoo). I'm glad that I can at least mask some versions so they don't upgrade, but one day break something so I have to upgrade. Also the most important thing in Debian is security backports, and they really track vulnerabilities. In Gentoo GLSAs are rare, sometimes months of not being issued. Without security advisories I can't mask my web browser from upgrading, it's just unsafe.

i use gentoo since 2005, if i was less stupid i would start using it earlier. i have been written an utility for rpm based distros that would have http path with src.rpm files in config file, would download src.rpm package, try to build it. check output, get dependencies, if any, repeat the process recoursively. that way i was able to build extra software for my redhat systems. also i was able to update rhels by not having access to binaries but to sources only. i also played with debians...
