It was what later became the Apple IIGS.

The project was canned, then revived.  "Golden Gate"
meant a bridge to the future, as in a bridge from the
8-bit Apple II to the 16-bit Apple IIGS.  When the IIx
project was revived, the new code name was "Pheonix"
as in "resurrected from a firery death" or something like
that.
