When rats ate my car's wiring, the Ford dealers refused to fix my car. Eventually found a mechanic in New Jersey who sent it to the dealership he has connections with, and 8 months/$11,000 later, my windshield wipers and back camera do not work...

oh, the other thing about my car: 3 days of parking kills the battery. After several expensive failed attempts to fix it at shops, I put in a $10 cut-off switch. So now I pop the hood and disconnect the battery when I park.

Otherwise the car is great -- I've crossed the US several times in it, once without turning off the engine!

I had a buddy recently had to pay $500 for a radio update on his newer Chevy. While it was 'waiting' for this update it constantly drained the battery and eventually bricked the car, and since it's one system with the regular car functions there's no way to remove it.

The whole EV situation is a joke. As soon as a manufacturer drops support for hardware, software or cloud infrastructure the vehicle relies on for feature enablement your vehicle is either outright bricked or on an unknown timeline for bricking. So environmentally friendly. Also, what if you have a Chinese EV (a major player globally as heavily subsidised by the Chinese government) and there's a conflict or political falling out that results in sanctions/action that negates your vehicles access to services? A ton of vehicles are suddenly useless. That means govs either can't take punitive measures against a foreign power or risk giving an advantage as productivity/services grind to a halt due to nonfunctional EVs.

This is not exclusive to EVs. All vehicles regardless of power train are hyper connected these days. 91% of new cars sold in the US are "connected" with cellular, in dash apps, wifi hot spots, and so forth. Vehicle telemetry is even more common and goes way back to the 90s. Feature enablement is on a shorter timeline, but I would argue this has been true for a while. Can't get a car that can play my cassettes anymore. I also find it encouraging that BMW has dropped their monthly fee for heated seats, citing backlash. I predict the feature enablement will be for things like self driving, which I will never ever trust my life to. That's the hot ticket these days and I have no interest.

I can not imagine buying a new car. Generally I go for ~10yr old car..

However in 10 years there will be no 10-year old cars...
