Sony, the manufacturer of the Mac's drives (or most of them) for the last few generations of these drives made them virtually identical to their PC equivalent, i.e. they use the same mechanical components and form factor. This means that you can take the front panel of the Sony PC drive and put it on the Mac version of the drive. One warning : the eject mechanism is slightly longer on the Mac drive so you will have to increase the hole for the eject button on the front panel. Otherwise it works perfectly. And I should know because I have got one in my tower case. The models are : MP-F42A Mac - MP-F420 PC MP-F52A Mac - MP-F520 PC MP-F72A Mac - MP-F720 PC Warning : the front panels are not exchangeable with another model. This means you must use the front panel of the MP-F520 for the MP-F52A drive because the front panel for the MP-F420 does not fit. I do not know how easy these parts are available in the market, but I had a slight advantage in obtaining mine. Additionally: When you are making the 19pin to 20pin internal cable to connect to the drive, be warned. Although the cable is a simple straight thru (1-1, 2-2, etc...) cable there is one exception. This is not possible with the Sony MP-F51W (800k) and MP-F75W (1.4M) Mac drives. Although they are the correct size, no front panel exists that fits on them. The disk slot is simply not in the correct location, i.e. it is higher than later generations drives. I am sending this as a new message instead of a reply, because my provider's server complains that the included test is larger than the new text and refuses to post the message.
