OpenBSD/GabeDeck part II — Carrying on from my previous post, I tested OpenBSD on the steamdeck. Preliminary result: Mostly good! Test conditions: OS: FuguIta 7.6 with the latest patch as of today HW: Steamdeck OLED PCB version 5, type-c hub, 64G USB drive, keyboard and mice. Result: OpenBSD boots normally. From OS’s perspective the hardware is unremarkable. The only funny hardware is 28de:1205, the build in Valve controller. The hardware is otherwise a normal APU based microPC. At Idle...

OpenBSD on Steamdeck? I acquired a steamdeck mainly to play older games. The power consumption is pretty good, CPU/GPU draw ~3 to 4W when playing fallout NV. The firmware offers some interesting features too. I successfully undervolted the CPU by -50mV and GPU by -30mV. The stock steamOS offers a desktop mode, where the console would switch to KDE. When docked to an external monitor and keyboard, the console is somewhat serviceable for desktop stuff. Anyone tried booting OpenBSD on the deck?...

Two weeks of OpenBSD desktop — Here is a small report of my two week experience with OpenBSD for the first time in my life. So, I have ASUS RoG Strix laptop. Touchpad doesn't work, I just use USB mouse. I haven't tried to figure this out yet. Everything else works perfectly fine. I dual-boot OpenBSD alongside GNU/Linux (Gentoo). Multicore performance -- I've recently come back to OpenBSD on a laptop, running it on a Panasonic Toughbook. I've noticed something that I'm not sure used to be this way a few years back (around 6.4 or so?): When multiple processes try to run kernel locked syscalls, they spend _a lot_ of CPU time spinning on the kernel lock, quickly burning through the battery. I'm pretty sure it didn't use to be that way 5 years ago. Did something change? Or am I misremembering?

Have tried OpenBsd a few times and liked it, but what holds me back is lack of support for liba/vaapi etc. I find myself wondering why this is a hurdle for OpenBsd as all of the other BSD family have it implemented without issue? Maybe someone could throw some light onto what makes it an obstacle?

Finally the new Broadcom WiFi card arrived for my old Macbook Air, so I can give OpenBSD a proper go! I am so excited about it. Installed the new card, flashed install75.img, off I go, wish me luck!

living with arcticfox browser on OpenBSD — I have been using arcticfox for few years now, it gives me a good old software vibe. My old computer is an intel Skylake. The browser builds and runs ok abeit a bit slow. I think this is because, on OpenBSD building arcticfox with -O2 will produce crashing binary (-O1 is ok, even the README says to only use -O0). If you've missed it there have been a number of security issues patched; namely in openssh, opensmtpd and most recently for Zenbleed. Check out undeadly.org for details. Good time for to run syspatch if.you haven't for a while.

Interesting idea from @solene — Came across this post on solene's capsule. Basically has an intent to create an OpenBSD package to deploy a QubesOS style app isolation setup using VMD. Sounds interesting and it would be nice if the VM template system is generic enough to be used for general VMD deployment.

Anyone running OpenBSD on a laptop have any tips or tricks they want to share? One tip I have is turning off hardware acceleration in Firefox. Before I did that the laptop would rapidly heat up, fans at full speed, and battery life signficantly impacted.

An opener... — So, I guess the first thing to ask is who if any of you lovely people are using OpenBSD? What are you using it for? Personally I've been daily driving it on an x270 since OBSD 7.2 and am loving it. I have a more modern laptop with Linux on it but I honestly find myself more drawn to the x270. It's secure, lightweight and I'm learning new skills :)
