Game review: Nebulous: fleet command

The richness of the game mechanics is unbelievable!

Here are some examples. When launching a fleet wide missile strike, you can edit the launch sequence to first launch a dedicated E-war missile to mask the signature of damage dealing missiles behind it! As for warhead selection, you can pick armor piercing, high explosive. When it comes to HE warhead, you can pick impact or delay fuse! Impact fuse equipped warhead will mainly damage modules that are installed superficially on the hull, while delay fuse paired with AP-HE warhead will damage interior compartment of the ship. This setup could blow up intel center, so you could loss details on the movement and status of enemy ships. In the worst case, such warhead could set off your reactor and your ship turns into a tiny star for a bit. There are also many types homing system for you to pick. Say, you have better detection and discovered an enemy ship, the enemy ship could have its point defense turrets clustered on one side of the ship. In this case, you could plot a path for your salvo by hand to avoid the side of the ship with the best point defense coverage.

Now apart from missiles there is a wide selection of turrets, each can be mounted on a hard point of the right size on your ship. If poorly placed, you could have only a third of your turrets being able to shoot at your target, while the remaining turrets occluded by your ship’s hull.

I’m still learning the game, so the following part is probably not entirely accurate.

To discover enemy ships you could use different classes of sensors, passive surveillance, active radar etc, each have their strength weaknesses and counter. Passive sensor could locate target without emitting EM radiation, but you need multiple passive sensors to triangulate the target.

Active radar could range find the targets on its own. The author of the game must be a radar technician or something, in this game, active radars have the concept of main lobe and side lobe!!! The unwanted and unavoidable side lobe emission from your radar could give away your location even if it is not transmitting directly towards your enemy’s direction! The authors certainly know their stuff.

Again the game mechanic is very rich, I could highly recommend the game, its available on steam, runs on Linux
