Thief - Deadly Shadows replayed 2024. Thoughts.

I recently re-played Thief - Deadly Shadows. I got it on Gog.com several years ago, but never got it running well until now. There are a lot of fan-fixes and patches available that will make it a bit better (SneakyUpgrade is what I used). Still had some issues with crashes and things, but nothing a reload wouldn't solve. I played on Linux in wine, so some things may have been introduced because of that too. I was able to comfortably finish the campaign though, and I had a lot of fun doing it.

I was a Dark Project and Metal Age-player before DS came out, and I understand the critique that many older fans had for the title when it came out. I think much of the technical limitations were introduced to get it to run on the Xbox, but I'm only guessing.

Many mechanics are different, but the core is very similar. Stealth features some more options this time around. It is "open" in a different way than previous titles. You can choose in which order to do missions, and you can also earn some money by robbing people in the city between missions. Stolen goods now needs to be sold to a fence, and there are several in the city. Each accepting certain types of goods. The money earned this way can then be spent at a vendor, of which there are also several in the city. Their stock varies somewhat and this can make you run around to get everything you want. In general I like this concept a lot. Feels like it matters a lot more to clean out a place of it's loot.

Many of the missions are great, but some stand out. "The House of Widow Moira" is very atmospheric and a fan favorite it seems. I personally like "Robbing the Cradle" as well, but it is a bit frustrating at times.

The ending is the only thing I was a bit disappointed by. I hadn't actually finished the "artifact run" because my saves were corrupted when I tried many years ago. I just felt that the ending cut-scene was a bit of a let down.

All in all, I think it still stands after all these years. It's wonky, and it will glitch out on you, but It's fun once you get into it.

Anyone else that has played this old classic and remembers it fondly or perhaps not so fondly? (Screenshot stolen from steam-store-page).

Yeah, I'd say go for it! Mind you, the yankiness of ragdoll-bodies is still there together with some other stuff, but if you like the type of game, I think you'll have a good time!

I remember the original Thief game pretty fondly. I think I lost track of the franchise for a while, and then that style of gameplay seemed to become Assasin's Creed only. From what you're saying, it looks like a lot of fun.
