Re: "I find myself still using vscode"
...and I find myself still using neovim. I do go back to it from time to time. I recently removed evil entirely from my config. I feel like the primary blocker is not knowing enough, or not being proficient enough, yet. the longer break I take from emacs it seems the more I struggle to use it effectively the next time I go back to it.
the solution? I guess I'll have to continue (re)learning thoroughly when I get the time.

You are probably overwhelmed by Emacs videos and other people's setups, and cannot find a setup for yourself. There are only two ways: stick to good configurations like Spacemacs or Doom, or use vanilla Emacs and build it up step by step. If you are going to use Emacs as a text editor, then just edit text in it. It took me over 15 years to feel native in Emacs. Don't make the mistake of technology hopping; it doesn't make any difference where you edit your text file until you understand the difference personally for yourself, not the difference shown in somebody else's video.
