Kildare project will protect from a 100 year flood event

Paul O'Meara, 17 Dec

Work on a project which will provide flood protection on the outskirts

of Naas is three quarters done.

The Morell flood management scheme is currently under construction and

is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.

The plan is to have it handed over fully to KCC by the end of 2026.

Once completed, it will protect homes and business within the townlands

of Kileenmore, Turnings, Ballyhays, Sherlockstown, Tuckmilltown,

Blackchurch and Killeen from a 100-year flood.

According to KCC it will improve the quality of life for people living

in 60 homes currently impacted by flooding from the Morell River and

remove delays caused by flooding from the N7 and local roads.

As part of the scheme, KCC and the Office of Public Works are

trialling new species-rich seed mixes on flood embankments to increase

biodiversity and provide additional environmental benefit. If

successful, these trials will be considered across all flood schemes in

County Kildare.
