People on The Straight Dope joking about food waste:

Dear Abby gave this weight-loss advice: “Regardless of what your mother told you, cleaning your plate is not going to help any starving children in Africa.”

Not wholly truthful piece of advice since food waste does have a climate impact which in turn causes famines. When I was a kid I foodwasted so much. I never wanted to finish my plates even with more than half left and I still feel guilty about that. Since I grew up I got way better about it. I can’t remember even one time doing it. That’s mostly due to having more control over what gets put on my plate in the first place.

Although I’ve had food go bad in the fridge or pantry. Preventing that is the next level.

In this study, we cultured bacteria of public health importance found on wristbands, determined whether there is a correlation between wristband material and prevalence, and tested three household disinfectants for efficacy in reducing bacteria on wristbands made of plastic, rubber, metal, and cloth, using standard microbiological assays.

Great study (and horrific results) but also the watch itself is an issue, I’m thinking? It’s already known that you should never bring electronics to iffy places since most gadgets have a temperature range where bacteria thrives.

Magic removed the “conga line” rule:

Revising the earlier example under the new rules, my 5/5 attacker gets blocked by your 3/3 and your 4/4. It’s now the declare blockers step, after blockers are declared, our last opportunity to do anything before combat damage is dealt. I pass priority. You have that Giant Growth in hand. You can still save the creature of your choice. We’ll say you want to save that 3/3, probably for the same reason I wanted it gone, so you pump it up to a 6/6. We move on to combat damage, and now I get to assign my creature’s 5 damage any way I want. Most likely, I’ll take out your 4/4, as it’s the best I can do. But maybe I have, you know
plans and would rather deal 3 damage to the 6/6 and 2 damage to the 4/4. That’s okay, too.

So now double blocking is even weaker than it was. And some of my favorite cards (tricks that give one toughness or prevent one damage) are now unplayably weak. But they’ve apparently playtested this inhouse for a full year.

I love Star Wars.

The Galactic Empire kills the innocents on Alderaan (with an “the Galactic Empire has a right to defend itself” rhetoric that’s all too familiar these days).

Luke destroys a weapon (the Death Star) just hours before that weapon would fire on the Yavin base.

Later, he learns that Darth Vader is someone very much like himself. On Dagobah it’s his own face under that mask.

In the throne room, he ends up throwing away his own sword, like Obi-Wan had done before him.

Wars do not make one great. Destroy weapons.

Andor: the movie omnibus:

This is for people who think “Please don’t edit Andor, it’s already perfect
I’d take it as movies though.”
This is Andor season one, rearranged into four movies of roughly two hours each, removing no content whatsoever, just focused on each of the four main arcs and rearranging some scenes to keep as much relevant content as possible contained to those arcs’ movies, for slightly easier focus and consumption.

Neat!

Now, what I loved about Andor was that it was literature, not just laser pop. It was like Sartre or Kafka or Harlan County in the galaxy. Skeleton Crew is just empty laser pop, not only compared to Andor (everything would be) but compared to any of the shows. But it’s the most well-executed laser pop we’ve seen Star Wars do on the small screen or maybe in any format.

It’s too early to say just two episodes in. But this is great so far.

According to it, good players will get the most points out of aiming at T20 (that is the triple ring of the 20 wedge), mediocre players at T19, and bad players at single 8 near the bullseye and near 16.

I haven’t played darts since I was a kid (I came to think of it as I reread Liar Game just now). This video (made by the Approval voting guys, a rival to my preferred STAR voting) also shows clearly how IRV sucks:

How our voting system (and IRV) betrays your favourite candidate - YouTube

Or rather, I thought it showed it clearly but judging from the YouTube comment thread below, people didn’t get it. “What’s the problem, the most popular party won” they say.

The problem was that ranking ideal over good-enough caused the bad party to win. In every scenario, the same amount of people voted for the bad party, which wasn’t enough for bad when people voted good>ideal>bad, since then good-enough still won. But when people voted ideal>good>bad, that inadvertently caused the bad party to win without actually being more popular on its own merits. That was the problem. It leads to people in IRV being punished for honestly preferring their ideal candidate.

This is why “Favorite-betrayal Criteria” is a good election criteria and why STAR is the best system, and why even Approval voting (advocates for which made that video) is better than IRV.

The worst thing that can happen in a STAR election is that everyone bullet votes—but that scenario is isomorphic to Approval voting! So since Approval voting is good enough, STAR is great.

(Actually that’s the second worst thing. The worst thing is if the electorate sucks and votes for a jerk. And that’s unfortunately very likely. Get better, electorate!)

2024-12-02 09:35

I advocate for STAR voting (as in, I’m unaffiliated with any origanization, I just tell people how I think it’s the best system) and it irks me when people say IRV is “a step in the right direction” or “better than nothing” as this page shows:

STAR Voting and Ranked Choice - Pros and Cons

Although that second line I’m not sure I think should be green. “Underdog” candidates aren’t always heroes in a time like ours when the far right is so mobilized. STAR voting is the best in letting the electorate express themselves nuancedly and clearly, and letting those choices be reflected in the outcome, but
 the electorate kinda sucks!

Heck, I’ve said that one advantage Rebirth had over Kingdom Builder is how with KB it was like pulling teeth but when Rebirth hits the table people have been happy and having fun. Even though there’s more than a few rough corner cases 😅

Elving’s Musing’s on Amazing Spider-Man:

Zeb Wells has worked on-and-off as a freelance writer on a variety of Marvel titles in the 2000s and contributed small issues in titles like Tangled Web before becoming part of the Brand New Day writing team, where he wrote the controversial story “Shed” and a better regarded Rhino story, he also wrote miniseries and tie-ins elsewhere, before taking a hiatus from Marvel to the world of Web Animation (Robot Chicken among others) only to return in the late 2010s as part of Jonathan Hickman’s writing team where he wrote Hellions, a largely humor-based title focused on Kieron Gillen’s version of Mr. Sinister as an over-the-top dandy, and a team of anti-heroes.

I really did hate Shed, but I really loved Hellions, and there was also an amazing run on The New Mutants in there.

Hellions took characters I didn’t care about and made it an azaming run. Psylocke is now one of my faves mostly because of that run.

So I’m finally catching up on Wells’ ASM. Just got through “Dead Language”. I like this run. As per ushe when Reddit is hating I’m left scratching my head because I like it. Always been a Felicia fan đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

My first Marvel comic was Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #76, a heartbreaking Felicia issue.

From looking at a bunch of his work, Wells’ work focuses a lot on a sense of mean-spirited humor, apparent in the Robot Chicken cartoons which is often ugly and mean-spirited in the early MAD comics vein but without actually being great art or great writing as the MAD comics were. His work on Hellions is a cast of amoral a–holes and murderers, so his mean-spirited approach is entirely fitting there, since the point is to keep audiences at a remove and not have them identify with the characters too much.

I felt like Hellions did have heart, unlike Robot Chicken.

His work on Spider-Man comics is a little different in that it’s been a lot more overly serious and violent in comparison.

Yeah, I remember reading Shed (another serious and violent Spidey story) and thinking “is this really the same writer?” That’s why I hesitated picking up his ASM.

Whereas Wells’ first issue is redolent of the worst kind of “mystery box” storytelling.

Yeah. For one issue. Then the run immediately moved on to normal super hero antics until finally unpacking the mystery box a few months later in one arc.

While this review makes a lot of good points the main complaint is that of an Peter/MJ shipper. đŸ’đŸ»â€â™€ïž

Sometimes I forget how much I hated the “One More Day” retcon and wish it had never happened. Not just for Mary Jane but for all the other stuff that happened before it. Resetting characters to their “iconic roots” is fine for DC but that’s not what I want from Marvel.

One More Day got rid of something good and it did it in a really dumb way. Whenever editors and writers would talk about how they hated the marriage I’d be a little nauseated how callous that sounded.

But it’s been 17 years since it happened. DC comics have rebooted five times since One More Day. I sometimes forget what a third rail it is.

Now that it did happen, we can finally see Peter and Felicia make it work, is the silver lining.

Have there been even better runs, whether with Peter Parker or with other Spider characters? Sure. But I’m having fun. From my current stack of comics it’s one I turn to most gladly and have the hardest time putting down.

Kingdom Builder / Rebirth comparison thread:

Rebirth feels like a worse version of Kingdom Builder. | Rebirth

A long board game day with Halo, we played 2p games for seven and a half hours!

First we winchester drafted Shadows over Innistrad (w/o EMN). Normally when we winchester draft six boosters (and don’t worry, environmentalists, we used cube cards not fresh boosters), the decks get super weak and almost always need three colors but Halo got a really fast Boros deck with a few bombs. I drafted really poorly, committing to Jund super early. I had more synergies (I had plenty of delirium cards and a few madness cards—why are the mechanics of this block so ableistly named) but that wasn’t enough so I ended up losing 1–2. But
That one win, the first of our three games, felt really good because there were so many on board traps that I spotted and didn’t fall in. First, I knew that he had a Stern Constable so even though I was tempted to use Arlinn Kord’s +1 ability on my Kessig Dire Swine for the win, I instead used the +0 ability to get a wolf token and went to my attack phase, so he tapped down my swine, and in my second main I got rid of his tapper, rather than any of his big creatures, with my Murderous Compulsion. Then, when he alpha struck on the back swing, he was hoping that I wouldn’t realize how he could drain with his Wayward Disciple but I made sure that when I blocked, none of his creatures would die while still covering all of his tramplers. That felt like a galaxy brain play. Less using my own resources well and more being really aware of what he was bringing to bear. Fun fun fun.♄ Leaving me with 1 point of life so I could swing back for those last points. He had both a Fiery Temper and an Explosive Apparatus but only mana for one of them, since I had killed his discard outlet. Then I lost the other two games, getting choked on red in the second game and flooding out on the third—he also played really well and his deck was just way better and tighter. 1–2.

Then we played Rebirth, the first time either of us tried the Ireland side. Wow, it’s a huge step up in complexity just because there are just that many more things to remember. Scotland: “Score my tile, maybe get a castle and it’s no big deal if I forget because that can be adjusted later, and maybe get a cathedral card and that’s the one thing I really need to remember.” On the Ireland side I need to remember tile scoring and castles just the same, but also I really need to remember to use tower powers and to check whether I scored one or more of the eight public goals. So while the Scotland side is a really accessible game and I’m so grateful that they’re still making games that aren’t that hard to learn, the Ireland side is definitively nerds only. But it was really fun! First game I had a plan and I managed to execute on it and win by a huge margin. Second game I was a little more overwhelmed, fell behind on castles (I had four to his eight), so I only won by a less than twenty point margin. 2–0. The Ireland side is really fun. This is one of my favorite games right now and I hope hope hope it has legs.

Then one game of Radlands! He showed the power of “underpowered” camps like Obelisk and Warehouse, paring them with a Training Camp and a lot of punk-generating cards. Both Obelisk and Warehouse are slated to be removed in the expansion for being underpowered but we see Warehouse as one of the very strongest camps, and we’ve had many games won by Obelisk too. My own setup was no slouch: I had a Reactor combining with both Mulcher and Railgun. But then I played like a kratt, forgetting to mulch before I blew the Reactor.đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž He had a huge card advantage which I managed to pare down with both the Reactor followed by Radiation, but he could rebuild and in the end he won with Vera, Muse, and Argo on the table. 0–1.

We played three games of Scrabble Together after that. First we tried a house rule (to make the game harder) that Halo suggested: twenty goals, no helpers, and then if we can’t beat the twenty goals, our “score” is how many goals we did manage to do. But then we forgot to count.đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž I liked the house rule because his other ideas for how to make the game harder (playing to more goals) would’ve made the game longer. But then maybe we don’t really need a rule to make the game more difficult right now. We usually do win when playing the game rules-as-written (which we did for our second and third game of this tonight), but it’s still an interesting time getting there. It’s sort of like a sudoku; you always win but it’s fun getting there. And it’s not guaranteed that you’ll win—there were some tense moments. I’m really digging this game. It’s just fun playing classic games and this is a more accessible version. My recommendation is for people who are super geeky on Scrabble but want to play with people who aren’t, this is a good game to level the playing field and have fun together. Whereas for people who aren’t already Scrabble-heads, there are other tile layers that might make more sense like Rebirth or Qwirkle. L, W, W.

Then we played another Knizia, “Throwing Sevens”, a simple push-your-luck dice game. I happened to win but it’s a mostly random game. 1–0.

That led us to discussing Dix Mille, and as I’m so confused on how that works compared to King of Tokyo, I was like “enh, let’s just play King of Tokyo” even though it really doesn’t make sense on two players. It was one of the games we played all the time when we first became friends back in 2011, but neither of us had played it since 2012, 2013 or so shortly after Power Up first came out. Even though the game was dumb on two players I really had a fun time. It came down to the die on the last turn and Halo managed to win, and to win by collecting twenty stars even! Good job! 0–1.

After that, we had less than one hour left so we brought out Mottainai. I played pretty sneakily since he zerg rushed five works in the Gift Shop including a Flag and a Scroll for fifteen points total
but I had a Lampshade, giving me three points on the table + fifteen on backorders. I had been tayloring aggressively for metal and clay; especially clay since I also had a clay on sales (although, since that sale wasn’t covered it ended up being unnecessary with the lampshade since Halo never sold any clay himself). But that only goes to show how even with poor board control it’s possible to win with good fundamentals. 1–0.

Finally a game of Go where Halo played much better than he has been playing lately. It made me really happy to see. He outplayed me in five different fights leading to a win of over a hundred points. 0–1. (In our latest series of games where I’m white giving him two stones, this makes it 2–2 overall, since I had a 2–1 lead going into tonight.) It was just a return to form for him and I was so happy to see it.

Overall a very even night where we won five games each, plus the coop Scrabble Together which we lost one and won two. (If counting the magic game as one match instead of three games, we would’ve won four games each outside of the coop games.) Great day.

Iff means a mutual if, or an “if but only if”. I would want a word for “x if y, and maybe x without y, but y is super unlikely and so is x but if there is y then for sure x”, something that really emphasizes the unlikeliness of x.

The KDL Document Language

There are good things about node/tree languages like this; I use XML and s-expressions for plenty of things and they’re both node based. So I’m not discarding the entire thing.

Personally I’m probably going to to reach for s-expressions or YAML sooner than this. I use both of those every day. I like YAML more and more actually, now that I’ve got better tooling for it than I had in my YAML-hating days.

Another bad thing about kdl is that the syntax highlighting on its own web page can’t render the slashdash comments.

Mx Tool Box is part of why there are so many freakouts around this because people go there to troubleshoot and one of the things they see is this scam blacklist. Even though there might be some other issue like reverse DNS.

2024-10-29 07:39

Thirteen years ago, an email thread about them:

Perhaps if you had solid arguments for needing to charge for removals you would have been taken seriously. But when every other blocklist manages to do free removals without any problems you need to come up with some pretty damn solid arguments.

Their cheapest option is 45 CHF per year and only if I commit to two full years. That would’ve been more than I pay for the entire server. (Not to imply that I considered giving in. That was never on the table.)

It’s a slippery slope, too, because paying to one extortionist would be one thing and then every single one of the sixty blocklists I’m green on would also start charging the same amount.

Someone on irc://oftc.net/linode pointed out how Wikipedia’s criticism of this scam got deleted:

I used the Mario example to say that it was different than books or movies where the protagonist lives to the end, not to say that it was the same as in D&D.

In some games you can respawn as the same character in the same game world. Just try again; sometimes on the same screen like Celeste, other times having to start all over on world 1–1 like Mario.

Other games you lose it all. The entire game world goes away and that was your one chance at exploring it and you lose it if your character dies. Like Nethack.

In between are games where the game world doesn’t go away and you don’t even have to start over your exploration of it, you can keep learning more and more. More clues, more about the culture, the locations, the people there, the obstacles and monsters, but your character does go away and you have to start over building it up. Some people play D&D like that.

There are also games where you can’t die, where you can just explore the entire game from beginning to end with the same character safely. Like Sam & Max Hit the Road, or Gone Home.

All popular. In different ways, for different people or different moods, for different reasons. You can play roleplaying games in any of these modes, too.

So I just don’t buy:

People who want to play out a fantasy movie, or fantasy movie franchise even. That’s a social and demographic issue. No one wants to watch Frodo die to a random wolf attack while trudging through The Old Forest. And only a relatively small number of people want to play as him as he’s ripped to shreds by those wolves. This is true regardless how reliable and well communicated the information is on the creatures in monster book is.

as a universal truth.

The topic was how some ways of presenting encounter building had some pros and cons and could be one factor leading to a serve-up-encounters playstyle, which in turn has pros and cons.

If I’m trying to come up with a charitable reading of why you suddenly went “no-one wants to watch a main char death from a random wolf attack” in a discussion about whether or not the way the PF2e Bestiary presents encounter difficulty can be a significant impact on how GMs design their games, I guess saying that “this is what the people want, regardless” is a way to reassert your orthogonality claim from the other direction: implying “people want to be served up safe encounters regardless of what knowledge the monster book gives their GMs, so it’s not because of the knowledge that that playstyle happens. The knowledge just makes the playstyle better.”

After I had already been making the case against the latter half of that, thinking that the knowledge does afford that playstyle, making it not orthogonal

I disagreed with the former (“people want to be
”) with the rot13’d examples from fiction and the Mario example from games.

(And arguably the way published adventures are set up are a bigger influence on how these games are gamemastered, even for homebrew since modules influence a games’ culture. I was so happy about Lost Mines of Phandelver which was so exploratory, and so sad when they switched to more scripted event-by-event setups like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.)

(The uncharitable but more immediate reading would’ve been “Sandra, no-one likes your game where you can die from random wolf attacks so get with the program”. But I’m not worried about that because I know my game got better after adapting this style. I went from having to drag people to the gaming table kicking and screaming once a year, to people showing up twice a week for years, sometimes even calling me to schedule it, before we got our calendar app.)
