The final top gear/grand tour episode

I felt they layered it on a bit thick, but perhaps that is the point.

22 years in the making

It's been 22 years since I as a young lad took up watching Top Gear. It might only have been 20 or 19 years for me, but regardless, I was still a teenager.

I said the nostalgia was layered on thick, but to me Top Gear was also more than a show. It's like the other major hits, Friends, Big Bang Theory, Desperate Housewives and so on, they aren't great because of the content per se, but because of the people.

It's the same reason the networks tried and failed at creating subsequent copies of these things, it's not the same.

The trouble of generations

If you are a millennial or GenY like myself, there is a high likelihood you suffered under the terrible parentingship of Boomers/GenX. It's why these shows or rather these people became so popular, they catered as role models to generations that didn't have any.

This is where our trio comes in, they are deeply flawed individuals, as evidenced by many snafu's off camera and sometimes on. The one thing nobody was ever in doubt of though, is that they were good friends and they became a role model for how to be a friend to many, myself included.

Friendships

The older I get, the more I understand the importance of friendships. The Clarkson, Hammond, May model of friendships may not be ideal, but it is often that model that has brought me some of my deeper friendships.

The very hazing way of being friends, with moments of vulnerability when there is a need for it. The whole kicking you while you are down, when you can take it, but standing up for you, when you are out past the deep end.

The end of an era

Many might not care and might not think of it as the end of an era, to me though it has been a source of joy from my teens to middle-age.

I salute you, Clarkson, Hammond and May. 🍻
