Greetings universe! I'm very happy to be here exploring Gemini. I have already found several interesting capsules, ports, and projects on Gemini. I hope to create an interesting capsule for others to visit. I have various (sometimes esoteric) interest, thus I may write about a wide range of topics. Including, but not limited to: Linux, bicycling, baking, weight training and anything else that piques my interest.
Today is a special day in my household. It is my birthday. As you get older (especially as an introvert), birthdays become more about your loved ones than yourself. My wife has several things planned for us today and I am going to indulge her with a smile while we do them. Although, truth be told I would be just as happy sticking to my routine as usual.
Starting a new year of life gives one a chance to set goals and reevaluate one's current trajectory. My current long term goal is to break the shackles of wage slavery. It isn't that my job is bad, I like my coworkers and the job isn't at all difficult. It isn't that I work too many hours, in fact I work less than thirty hours a week. It isn't the pay, I make more than enough to pay mortgage, bills, and still have some money to spare for saving and spending on frivolous things. Rather I find the mere concept of selling your time to an employer to be soul crushing. I will leave this topic for now perhaps I will write more on the subject later.
I don't mean to come off as melodramatic when discussing this topic, but I truly believe humans weren't designed for employment. I don't exactly have plan for my emancipation, however, I do have a few seeds of an idea for independence, hopefully one will blossom or perhaps they all will. I hope to write more on these as time progresses.
As far as short term goals go, I have a few. I would like to get a GNU Guix System built for all of my machines. I have two laptops, a pi, and a desktop that I'd all like to be on Guix. Currently my pi is running Debian and my primary laptop and desktop run Arch. I'm not a fan of Arch, but my systems are set up to my liking and there is some inertia preventing me from uprooting immediately. I have Guix installed on my X200, my plan is to configure this machine first, then moving my configuration to the other machines should be easier.
I'd also like to start using my bike more for transportation, instead of just recreational exercise. I need to improve my cardio in order for this to happen. I ride a fixed gear in a somewhat hilly area. Some of the climbs are very difficult for me. Ideally I'd be able to use my bike to get around just about everywhere I go when the weather allows it. This is definitely achievable since everything I do is in a ten mile radius (and 90% of everything I do is in a five mile radius).
I enjoy baking and eating fresh loaves of bread. So I also hope to be able to bake bread two times a week. This will be enough for my wife and I to never have to buy bread from the grocery store. I'm still a novice, so I look forward to learning and improving this skill.
Finally as far as weight training goes, I'd like to gain competence in compound lifts. I've been doing resistance training since the beginning of 2022. However, I still am intimidated by squats and deadlifts. I am afraid of injury so I have avoided those lifts. I really enjoy lifting as it is a purely objective pursuit. The weights do not care if you can lift them. There is no luck, you get out of it what you put into it.
I can't believe I have written this much. I meant to write a simple "Hello World" style post, and could not stop rambling. I'm off to the gym, before I indulge my wife in all her plans for my birthday. I hope everyone who reads this has an enjoyable day free from suffering. I am fortune to be here to begin another year of life.
