Solar alert

Issued on 2024 Oct 28 0850 UTC

A fast-forward shock was registered in situ in the solar wind data around 04:17 UTC on Oct 28th, possibly marking the anticipated arrival of a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) related to X1.8-flaring, which lifted off the solar surface on Oct 26th. The interplanetary magnetic field quickly increased from 7 nT to 26 nT with a minimum Bz reaching -19 nT. The solar wind velocity increased from 429 km/s to almost 600 km/s. In response to the ICME arrival minor geomagnetic storm levels were reached globally, while local geomagnetic conditions over Belgium remained only unsettled. The solar wind and geomagnetic conditions are expected to remain perturbed under the ongoing influence of the ICME with anticipated unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions and possible further isolated minor storms.
