Solar alert

Issued on 2024 Oct 24 0755 UTC

An X3.3 flare was recorded, with peak time 03:57 UTC on Oct 24, produced by NOAA AR 3869. Type II and Type IV radio emission were detected at 03:46 UTC on Oct 24 during the flaring activity. Strong coronal wave and dimming related to this event are visible in the SDO/AIA data. Currently no increase is observed in the GOES proton flux. It is also too early to see a coronal mass ejection in SOHO/LASCO data, but we are awaiting corresponding coronagraph data for further analysis.

Issued on 2024 Oct 24 1023 UTC

A fast halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed in SOHO/LASCO-C2 coronagraph data starting at around 03:48 UTC on October 24. The CME is directed primarily to the southeast from Earth's perspective and is associated with the X3.3 flare from NOAA AR 3869. It has an estimated velocity exceeding 1300 km/s. While the bulk of the ejecta is expected to miss Earth, preliminary analysis suggests that a glancing blow could possibly arrive on October 26. However, the prediction of its arrival remains with low confidence. Further analysis is ongoing to better determine the CME impacts.
