Discussion for the reading group for Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid
Week 8 check-in — Another week, another check-in! I just finished Chapter 10. The dialog in that chapter is surprisingly long, but good as always. I hope yall are still continuing to read GEB. We can do this!

Week 7 check-in — A little early, but that's because I'll be busy tomorrow. Checking in to see if folks are still reading! I just finished Chapter 9 and the prelude of Part 2. 2 more chapters and I'll finally be halfway through the book! The chapters are now quite a bit longer on average, but hopefully I'll be finished before March!

Week 6 check-in — Chapter 6's dialogue between Achilles and the Tortoise starts off in a way I can only describe as "Lucy promises she won't pull the football away from Charlie Brown right before he kicks THIS TIME", which entertains me quite a lot. I finished up Chapter 8, which I will warn has been quite a grind for me to read. It's a syntax heavy chapter, so fair warning before yall reach it.

Considering 2 saturdays without responses, should I continue doing check-ins? I plan on continuing reading GEB to its completion.

Week 5 check-in — Yall through chapter 5 yet?

Week 4 check-in — I'm slightly early, but it's Saturday in UTC. Finished chapters 5 and 6 (so I'm 2 chapters ahead of schedule) Also, I got the page count of Chapter 9 wrong. It's 27 pages instead of 39. After Chapter 9 is the start of Part 2, which starts with a 10 page prelude before Chapter 10. Should that be included in Week 10's reading with Chapter 10? That would make Week 10 a 62 page week.

Hofstadter on AI risk — Some really recommended supplemental reading.

Sorry if I don't do a check-in this Saturday — Taking time off of the internet entirely this week. I'll have Chapter 4 read (I'm 1 chapter ahead of the schedule) by Saturday. I suspect I won't be here this Saturday to do a check-in.

Week 2 Check-In — Another week, another chapter+! Have yall finished up the chapter?

I think I might read Chapter 3 today — Considering how short Chapter 3 is, I think I might read through it today so I have a little more prep for reading the 40+ page chapters in a week. Sorry for this messing the schedule up. My goal is to finish the book within a few months and I feel like doing these sudden and unexpected sprints of extra chapters could help keep me motivated as long as I don't do too much to the point of burning out. This will desync us, but I feel like it's not too much...

Week 1 Check-In (Introduction & Chapter 1) — Checking in quick to say that I'm on schedule! I appreciate that the Introduction references figures from quite further into the book (I see what you did there Douglas R Hofstadter!) While I won't give the answer to getting to MU, it was pretty easy for me to figure out due to a related problem I ran into about determining the maximum amount of coin flips needed to simulate a 6-sided dice roll.

Chapter Lengths (of the paperback version I have) I had absentmindedly mistook Roman numeral XX to be 22 in the BBS post... There are only 20 chapters. This should hopefully help brace us for extra long chapters before they happen. Introduction: 30 pages Chapter 1: 13 pages Chapter 2: 18 pages Chapter 3: 18 pages Chapter 4: 45 pages Chapter 5: 31 pages Chapter 6: 23 pages Chapter 7: 23 pages Chapter 8: 42 pages Chapter 9: 39 pages Chapter 10: 52 pages Chapter 11: 32 pages Chapter 12: 37...
