The Magellanic Clouds are two irregular dwarf galaxies that are located near the Milky Way. They are named after the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who was the first European to document them during his voyage in the early 16th century. The two clouds are the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).
The LMC is the larger of the two, containing a rich variety of stars, nebulae, and star clusters, making it a popular subject for astronomical studies. It is home to the Tarantula Nebula, one of the most active star-forming regions known. The SMC, while smaller, also hosts a diverse array of stellar phenomena and is notable for its unique irregular shape.
Both clouds are located approximately 163,000 light-years from Earth and are gravitationally bound to the Milky Way.
