Portal: Revolution

A mod for Portal 2 worthy of being an actual DLC

Another year around the corner and there's still a total silence from Valve about the next Portal game, just like for the past 8 years? Worry not! Modders got you covered. The team at Second Face Software delivers an amazing experience with Portal: Revolution.

The Plot

The events of Portal: Revolution take place sometime after Portal 1 and before Portal 2. You get woken up in a stasis chamber by Stirling - a core responsible for cleanup of test chambers. He wants to reactivate the facility by utlizing the successor of Project Borealis to teleport functional GLaDOS from the past to the present. A bold plan! And certainly there's nothing wrong that goes wrong along the way. Another notable character that makes an appearance along the way and interferes in the events is Emily - a former neuroscientist now trapped in one of the cores. I absolutely adored both of these characters, especially Emily. Stirling is cool but in many ways he's really similar to Wheatley in his manner of speaking and dumbness, which just isn't too original. Still, the plot (mostly) holds up well.

Gameplay

Portal: Revolution offers most of the mechanics of Portal 2, but expands on them with cool new elements like teleporting lazers, electric switches or air tubes. I really enjoyed playing with them. The test chambers made me scratch my head often and were satisfying to solve, while not overwhelming or too massive at the same time.

The not-so-good (SPOILERS!)

The ending is a bit underwhelming and it doesn't explain much. On one hand it seems we've managed to stop Stirling and the return of GLaDOS, Emily puts us back in stasis (on the moon this time), but if you've played Portal 2 you know that GLaDOS is just there, reassembled and ready to be activated by Wheatley and Chell. There are also inconsistencies with things like, portal guns being calibrated to shoot no further than 8km, yet in Portal 2 Chell is able to shoot all the way to the moon? Well, there might be away to skirt around these problems and give some unlikely explanations, but I've seen the replies of some of the team members working on the game simply saying that "Portal: Revolution isn't cannon so it doesn't have to be consistent with other games". It is a bit disappointing to hear as a Portal fan I think.
