when i decided to give Ultima I a try i was expecting it to be almost entirely just a historical curiosity thing and something i'd force myself to go through so i can actually go play the rest of the Ultima series. after all, this is not only a 43 year old game, but it's a 43 years old somewhat niche computer game, so there's little chance a 22 year old would even find it playable without always having multiple guides open, let alone actually really enjoy it?
but i was so so wrong. i loved this game so much. the dungeon crawling, the top down open world and the space shooter are all really really simple but they're so fun together. the nonsensical story that barely justifies anything that you do. figuring out the purpose and mechanics of things. its just a really enjoyable game that i really enjoyed playing. my playthrough was even entirely as a melee fighter, so i didn't even touch the magic and spells. planning on playing Ultima II as a mage to make up for that.
