Those who work with me IRL likely know that when I'm out of the house, I'm working from a 10 year old Dell XPS laptop. It's a solid laptop that, with any luck, will have accompanied me from the start of my undergrad degree to the end of my PhD. It have made some updates and repairs over the years, notably:
I have no idea how long these changes will last, but as the case begins to fall apart and I find I have far fewer screws than I started with, I am worried what will give next! I wish that laptop repairs were easier, I can't understand why we as a society are so quick to treat electronics as disposable, not taking into account the human and environmental costs of their making. I'm aware of companies like Framework, but it really feels insufficient given the scale of the problem.
In any case, my laptop will continue hanging on until it (likely suddenly) doesn't.
