Newsfin

Newsfin is a Netnews/Usenet alternative that runs on top of the misfin(C) protocol:

gemini://satch.xyz/misfin/

Each newsfin host provides a group, which is functionally similar to a mailinglist, that allows users with misfin addresses to post to the group and have their gemmails forwarded to the other members of the group.

These groups are additionally federated among multiple hosts. When a user posts a mail to a group on a particular host, that host also forwards the messages to other newsfin hosts, their neighbors. Each host checks that the message is not a duplicate and then forwards it off to the members of their group as well as their newsfin neighbors.

This creates a network of hosts that federate newsfin groups among their peers. Importantly, each host gets to choose which messages they want to forward and which they don't. They also get to choose which groups they want to host, and whether they want to use an alternative name for them.

The Newsfin Hierarchy is a recommended categorization system to ensure that Newsfin groups, including in private Newsfin networks, use consistent and expected names. Because each group has its own mail address on each host, any host may choose not to use this naming scheme and still be connected to the same federated group across the network. The hierarchy is described further on this page:
