Schadenfreude over my employer, Christmas Edition

The Corporation at which I work, has just cancelled the Christmas raffle, due to very low attendance.

My country, probably most western countries, have a culture of that you have to love your work and you have to love being at work, we have to feel like a family. They then refuse to give you raises, promotions or benefits and give you poor end of year reviews to justify it.

So it just makes me a little happy, that in an office with 12000 employees, they couldn't get attendance to give stuff away. 😂

If you are so unhappy why don't you leave

So my options of leaving, would mean worse pay and still move to the same kind of company culture. Sure I could find a different company, with a "better" culture, whatever that is. Ultimately though, in my experience most companies end up striving to be corporate and silo in the same toxic culture anyway, while I would still again, be paid less.

There is the whole question as well, that I don't really want to be doing IT any more and once I get out of my current debt, I won't be. That is a subject for a different time though.

A brief history

Part of the schadenfreude sentiment, comes from how they treat all their employee's, they are a market leader, but their main income isn't actually in their market sector. They are basically running mergers and acquisitions in the guise of expansion. So they buy companies, lay off most of the staff, merge the useful parts, sell the rest.

This goes for internal setups as well, I've only been with them a few years and have had 5 bosses in that time and seen a lot of colleagues disappear from one day to the next. They hired in a lot of people as well, under the pretense of very flexible WFH policy, which was rescinded about a year ago.

A history of the gifts for the raffle

So the gifts for the raffle, are gifts received from vendors, partners and so on. So gifts, the company received, because specific employee's did a good job, with their relations to these people.

You can probably see how it isn't very fair to raffle these off to the entire company, when these gifts were meant for specific people as a thank you. I get that we have laws prevent receiving gifts, to prevent corruption. But then at least give them to the department head and let him give it away to the team or host something with it.
