23-01-2024 Go see the doctor

Had a rough weekend. At least, it felt like it had been rough. I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary, I think. Still, I had a heart rate of at least 90-100 bpm since friday evening. It would keep going all night, sometimes accompanied by sharp bursts of pain in the chest. Since heart problems run in the family, I decided it wouldn't hurt to call the doctor about it. I called on monday morning at 8 am, and explained my symptoms to the lady on the phone. She asked me if I could come in at 9 am.

I arrived at the doctor's office at 8.45 am and sat in the waiting room for a while. Then the doctor called my name and led me to her office. I explained to her that my heartbeat had skyrocketed on friday evening and hadn't gone down since, and that I was worried it might be something serious because of my family's medical history. She measured my heartbeat and blood pressure, then filled in a form and told me to take it to the hospital, to get some blood work done. You can just walk in without an appointment, she said.

I arrived at the hospital, a 5 minute bicycle ride later, at 9.30 am. Got told I had to make an appointment, that I could, in fact, not just walk in. Called the doctor's office about it. Lady on the phone got audibly irritated about it and called the hospital to make an appointment for 10.05 am. Got stabbed with a needle. The nurse told me the results would be available that same afternoon. Left the hospital at 10.15.

Called the doctors office for the results of the blood tests. Got an automated voice telling me they could only be reached by phone between 8 am and 12 pm, except in the case of a life-threatening situation.

Called again this morning. The results of the blood test didn't show anything unusual. I was advised to see the doctor again, should the symptoms stay. I was somewhat relieved, I clearly don't have any of the heart problems that the rest of the family has. But there is only one other thing I can think of that could cause a 100 bpm heart rate for three days straight, and that is that it has to be a mental issue. It seems obvious, now that I think of it; some people get panic attacks when they're stressed, some get depressed, some dissasociate, and I get heart palpitations, I guess. Oh well, I'm glad the doctor was able to help me so quickly.
