review of a handful of XMPP clients (and notes)

aTalk

seems to be the winner because it has encrypted text/video/audio and can do video/audio with other installations of itself

movim

doesn't have encrypted chat using OMEMO or OTR. it has video and audio, but I haven't gotten it to work between two devices on my LAN :/

psi-plus

is /supposed/ to support video and audio but I haven't been able to figure out how to get them working on debian.

I use this on my desktop

pidgin

same deal as psi-plus

gajim

same deal as pidgin and psi-plus

messenger. fork of conversations.

haven't tested. (german link)

using admin user priv in prosody from psi-plus

in prosody, I have the register module disabled, and admin_adhoc enabled.

this is so admins are able to register new users without me getting 1000s of bots.

to use the adhoc commands from psi-plus, first you have to be logged in as the

account that is marked as admin in the prosody config.

Then you add the server itself as a contact, in my case "thebackupbox.net"

(notice. no user and @ sign, just the domain name)

then, you should get some notification thing at the bottom of the psi-plus window

click that to get it to pop up, to get it to go away.

right-click on the the server in your contacts list.

in that menu there should be an item named "Execute Command"

it should be a menu that has an item that is called "[Blank]"

click that, and a small window with a dropdown menu shows up.

select the command you want to do, run it I guess, fill in whatever form data it asks.

and you just ran a command on the server.
