Yesterday, as I was picking her up from kindergarten, I saw a couple of toys in her backpack. I grabbed them, and moved to giving them back to her teacher, when she hugged me, terrified.
I asked her what was going on, and she pleaded that I don't give the toys back. Then, the lie: a friend had given them to her, and she would return them on Monday. I noticed she was lying (she's very young, and really bad at it), and I immediately got really sad. This is a milestone I never wanted to reach.
Her mother and I had already talked to her about taking things from school without permission, why it is wrong, and how there would be consequences next time. We were able to calmly talk about the incident, ordered her to return the toys immediately on Monday, in person, to the teacher, with us at her side, and say sorry to the teacher. I think we managed the situation well, emphasizing the importance of honesty and trust between her and us, her parents, with no pusishments but with actual consequences for her actions.
But, again, this is a milestone I never wanted to reach. She got a little less innocent yesterday, and it breaks my heart. I vow to keep her trust and keep trusting her even if it gets harder everyday.
