There’s this article on Google titled:
“Gopher, Gemini and the Smol Internet”
First of all, “Smol”? Oh, man. The removal and replacement of vowels and consonants for the sake of being cute. Ugh. Anyways…
I read this article and found that Gemini is here for a reason. Now, this reason is important to consider within the context of data. Not statistical data, but “digital data”. Collecting data has always been a prevalent discussion during this technological era we’re in, more specifically in our own class as well. We discussed this aspect of Gemini, but this article did a good job of explaining what Gemini is and how/why it’s used.
“The web was supposed to bring us together.”
This one got me. That sentence just didn’t feel right when I read it. All I know, ever since I was young, was that the web was a place that was outright dangerous. My parents were very strict when it came to me being on the internet. When I was about 7-8 years old, I was always curious about that weird, gray box in my mom and dad’s room. You’d press this big bubbly button on this plastic, drab rectangular cube and it screamed at you hysterically up until about 5 minutes later. It was a Dell computer. It was slow. Extremely prone to viruses. My parents used it to look at their work schedules. That’s it.
“Somewhere, the holy grail of informatics turned into a poisoned chalice.”
This also got me. The internet was and still is such a toxic place. Where did we go wrong? Did the evolution of human existence stop when Steve Jobs released the iMac in 1997/8? Why are our lives so associated with the internet? Are our lives the internet? WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? WHO AM I? AHHHH I’M FREAKING OUT!!!
For some reason, I felt like I already knew what this article was about to explain after these first couple excerpts.
Hmmm. How can I put this in my own words? Okay:
“Gemini’s like that peaceful cabin-in-the-woods, secluded from all the bullshit that happens in your average neighborhood or city.”
It’s an internet-users hideaway from the web. It’s not Shangrila. There’s no spas or martinis. It's like a Hilton. Or Marriott. Or Best Western. You go there to get away from somewhere. You need a break. Right?
