I spawned in at a relatively flat area between a couple of different biomes and a pretty tall cliff on one side. The was an area of sand between the two biomes, though you wouldn't really call it a desert.
I messed about for a while chopping trees down, then as night started to fall I hastily knocked together a (very) small hut to avoid being killed by hostile mobs.
It's not much, but... Well, it's not much.
I planted some wheat seeds that I'd got from hitting the grass to see how farming/crops work in Minetest. They haven't grown at all after a few days so I suspect they may need to be adjacent to water. That may have been how it worked in Minecraft but I can't remember exactly.
There are a couple of ravines in the sandy area, though one is more of a pit than a ravine. The largest is just beside the shack and looks like it might have a cave system at the bottom.
The "ravine", including non-native fences (more on those shortly).
I decided to ignore the ravine(s) for now and just dig down from the surface as far as I could to see if I found anything interesting. I've been down quite a way so far without finding anything other than coal. Not even any open areas.
The "great staircase" as I call it. (I don't call it that.)
Having a break from digging the staircase, I dug a tunnel through the side of it to connect to the ravine. It wasn't very far down the ravine, but I used this point to start a spiral staircase around its edge down to the bottom (which you could see in the earlier shot of the ravine). Hopefully there is actually a cave down there or this may turn out to be a massive waste of time. And yes, I have to build a proper staircase rather than just digging/jumping my way straight down to the bottom; it's the sort of thing I do.
This is probably going to be the project for now until I get to the bottom.
