Setting Up a Gemini Server?

I'm not a computer expert by any means, but I enjoy some tinkering from time to time. I love the idea of getting small projects working in a brief period of time. That's why running my own gemini server sounded like a good thing!

To be honest, after getting a bit overhyped about the whole gemini thing, I was a bit disappointed to read in some logs that it might be preferable to publish using the good old www using a limited subset of features. Of course, it is not something that I can criticize, but.... I would have loved for some of those voices to have been much more radical! It is clear that the moment you are browsing in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc., any random link can make you leave the -supposedly safe- space that should be the smol web. Go hard or go home.

I tried to get gmniserv up and running, but had little success. gmid was a little easier, although I encountered some unexpected boulders along the way. The most absurd: when I asked ChatGPT how should I set up the config file, it gave me wrong information again and again. It wasn't until I RTFM, that I realised that all the syntax I was using was wrong!

The steps I followed were:

After that, I've created some simple scripts for quality of life (easy file updating and that kind of stuff). I still have to figure out how to get the RSS thing working... But this time I'll try to solve that by reading real documentation, instead of asking anything to an AI :)

I'm sure that my configuration is not the most secure and robust, but I'll try to improve it little by little and enjoying the journey!
