Random question. I'm planning to buy a new laptop for uni, since I've just broken my ten-year-old MacBook. I have decided on a ThinkPad T450, but I need some help deciding on the hostname.
On one hand, since it's a ThinkPad, I could call it Amethyst-II (my T400 is called Amethyst).
On the other hand, since it's replacing my MacBook, I could call it Pearl-III (the MacBook was called Pearl-II, and my first MacBook was just called Pearl).
What do you think?

@m0xee how cruel!! our beloved fellow hardware deserves own names! taking us though the valley of darkness of the final frontier, giving us joy with music and movies, providing access to the cyberspace.... ยท 1 day ago
Call it Lenny. Short for Lenovo. ยท 1 day ago
I used to have a naming convention for my Macs, but nowadays I just call my computers by their brand name: ProBook, ThinkPad, MacBookPro โ yeah, makes me look like that anecdotal guy who had five identical grey suits, but it is easy to remember ๐
So if your old computer is indeed dead and the new one is going to have a similar function and take its place, why not give it the old name? It does feel weird though if you bring the old one back from the dead and you have to come up with a name for it instead ๐ ยท 1 day ago
@captainrantcraft Why don't you use some means of autocompletion? I'm not a fan of automating absolutely everything and I'm using mksh which only has the most basic capabilities when it comes to completion, but even I have my tiny script that greps ssh config for a list of hosts, then using dmenu/wlmenu gives me a nice list to choose from so I only have to type in 2-3 characters and opens my favourite terminal with ssh session to that host, setting the title accordingly: I like terminals having remote sessions in them to have visible window title, unlike local ones. ยท 1 day ago
I'd hate having to type amthyst every time I'd want ot SSH into the computer. I like to keep them short and simple based on common character mostly reached by the left hand or otherwise just common and easy to type. Like `max` but not `headroom` :) ยท 1 day ago
