Itâs not the playersâ job to find the fun. It is your job as the game designer to put the fun where the players canât help but find it. When the players sit down to play a game, thereâs an implied promise from the game designer that if they do what the game tells them to do, it will be fun. So most players will do whatever the game tells them to do to achieve the desired goal (usually win), even if that thing isnât fun. When the game is done, if the players didnât enjoy themselves, they will blame the gameâand rightfully so!
Itâs your job as a game designer to make sure that what it takes to succeed at your game is the very thing that makes the game fun. Fun cannot be tangential; it has to be the core component of your game experience. I canât stress this enough. You canât hide the fun and expect your players to hunt for it. Thatâs not their job. Itâs your job as a game designer to lead the players to the fun.
Iâm loving Echoes of Wisdom so far (itâs great how thereâs often more than one way to solve puzzles) but one thing that kind of sucks is that so often the best strategy is to set up an autowin situation and then put down the Switch. Like, on Hero Mode there are no hearts so I go to bed and let the hearts slowly tick up. Or if a miniboss is tough I create a safe perch on top of a bolder and let some echoes fight for me.

The flags are in alphabetical order in there. -s is silent, what other apps call -q but curl uses s. -d is make a POST request instead of the default which is a GET request.

No, I canât play video games. This was a bad idea. The quiz show part makes me pass out. Giving up on this game at the 50% mark.
Even though I can get motion sick with video games, I very rarely reach for the screen shake setting; most games use it sparingly or within reason or within my limits.
The screen flash setting, on the other hand, I always turn all the heck off! But right now Iâm playing a game that doesnât have a screen flash setting (Lorelei and the Laser Eyes) and it really needs one. Worst of all, it really amped up the flashes later in the game (Iâm at 37.8% completion right now) instead of letting me know right away to nope out from this dumb game!

One of the reasons I do feel that Iâve improved as a writer the past few years is that when I find posts saying âSandra says this-and-thisâ, it used to be that almost always they had interpreted pretty much the complete opposite of what I meant (maybe because I mustâve been a liâl too subtle with some âinstead ofâ or âas opposed toâ or âbutâ or whatever) but these days I do find some posts that are like âSandra says this-or-thisâ (and sometimes they agree and sometimes they disagree) and I think âhurmph! Weâll see about tha.. Oh, theyâre right, that is what I thinkâ.
Itâs a far cry from a lot of the early blorb discussions where people were arguing against a complete misunderstanding of what I was trying to say. These days they often do seem to get it right. Maybe writing up the âprinciplesâ was a turning point there. That was a good idea. Thanks AW for that.

The Rings of Powerâs answer to Tolkienâs moral dilemma seems to be that the orcs are terrified of becoming thralls of Sauron, and that Sauron can mind-control them to some extent but not completely. I like it; it sort of tracks with how some of the men in his army were forgiven in The Return of the King. Like all attempted answers to the dilemma, including Tolkienâs own attempts, there might be a couple of weirdnesses and contradictions.

In the Trilemma setting it seems to me that orcs are people who ate the ashes of their ancestors. They are are a faction among others, in the game you can trade with them or even be them. (And of course in Zakhara all enlightened beings are equal; orcs are like any other person and can be good or bad or anything in between. Itâs a setting with many lines of conflicts but your species usually isnât one.)
Iâm trying to make a new homebrew setting now (âGĂ„voplanetenâ, itâs called) and there orcs are created beingsânot en masse but akin to warforged or golems (who both also existâtheyâre three different methods for more or less the same goal; so are animated skeletons and zombies). Theyâre created to serve. Making or having such servants is considered wrong and immoral among the peoples of GĂ„voplaneten (even mage hand, unseen servant etc are scandalous) but it sometimes happens anyway. But the control and the programming isnât always complete, which can explain any player character orcs. Sometimes the control and programming is more extensive which is how they can be a danger if theyâre doing some villainâs bidding. Unlike warforged which are more mechanical and golems which are more animated, the orcs are biological creatures, lab grown.
Not sure if this is good or bad. Like many things, itâs just the way it is on this planet. A way to explore labor politics and technology in a way thatâs a little more distant from diaspora history. Itâs not completely divorcable because humanityâs history has been so messed up and sick but the intent is to take a few steps away. The slavery storylines in Arden Vul started out as being too much and then just kept on being bad (almost Dark Sun levels of bad) so I want something very different from that.

As a general principle, Iâm OK with fewer hyperbudget shows and more indie works (which is also why comics and novels are so great). A super common theme in board games these past few years have been ârebuild society cozily and easily after some minor setbacksâ.
But maybe there wonât even be any humans. I get so stressed by these games since Iâm scared itâll make people complacent. Yeah, yeah, fear can also lead to inaction but the hope I wanna focus on is how we beat this thing, not âlol collapsing is a good thing because we can build something better on the cinderâ. If thatâs gonna be the attitude I wish good luck to whatever lichen or algae manage to survive because the doom I want us to stave off concerns all humans and many other species also.
Same, Iâve been playing Spiderette with physical cards. Although now that Iâve beaten it Iâm gonna switch to some other solitaire game, maybe one of Parlettâs creations, or Simple Simon or Iâll get a second deck and learn to play 40 Thieves.
I liked how Spiderette looked like classic Klondyke but felt like Spider (while actually being harder than two deck Spider). Single deck solitaire games are great. Thereâs a clunkiness to needing a second deck.
